Healing Sex Addiction & Porn Addiction

Part One: Understanding Sex Addiction

Sex addiction is particularly powerful because we are all emotional-sexual beings, and most of us at a very young age discover the pleasure of genital stimulation. In addition, most of us have been heavily exposed to highly sexualized themes and images through television, motion pictures and even subliminal advertising. In fact, in response to the difficulties and demands of life, it is not unusual for people to revert to seeking the bodily relief they recall experiencing when they get a sexual "hit."

Sex addiction can be treated successfully. Like other forms of addiction, its primary roots are emotional issues that lie deep within us. Generally, addictions appear as the unhealthy pursuit of pleasure in order to avoid pain. But people who suffer from sexual addiction are not altogether aware that their behavior stems from their own emotional pain.

All of us learn at quite a young age to block out emotional pain so we can adapt, survive and cope, and the patterns that result evolve and change throughout the course of our lives. Often, tendencies to avoid pain, which began in our childhood, are more problematic when we become adults. They can become obstructions when we are faced with the human need to feel deeply and experience emotional intimacy with others.

When people do not feel or respond to the nurturing force of love itself, an emotional and spiritual crisis takes place, a crisis that lies at the heart of addictive sexual behavior and addictive living in general. When we feel our connection to the nurturing force of love itself, and not just through a loved one, we have the capacity to appropriately discipline ourselves and contend with dangerous or hurtful temptations. And when we allow ourselves to be driven by anxiety or the rush of adrenalin instead, we are not at peace, and, subsequently, we are quite vulnerable to our temptations.
